EUA-CDE Steering Committee welcomes new Chair and three new members

The EUA Council for Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE) is pleased to announce that the EUA Board has appointed a new Chair and three new members to the EUA-CDE Steering Committee.

Appointed as the Steering Committee’s new Chair is:

Peter Hanenberg, Vice-Rector for Research and Doctoral Education and Director of the Doctoral School at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Portugal.

The three newly appointed Steering Committee members are:

- John Creemers, former Director of the Doctoral School of Biomedical Sciences, KU Leuven, Belgium; President, Organisation of PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System (ORPHEUS).

- Tanja Storsul, Pro-Rector for Research and Development, Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet), Norway

- Krzysztof Walkowiak, Dean of the Doctoral School, Wrocław University of Science and Technology, Poland

The new members succeed the outgoing Chair of the Steering Committee, Aleksandra Kanjuo-Mrcela from the University of Ljubljana, and the outgoing Steering Committee members Pirjo Nikander from Tampere University and Åse Gornitzka from the University of Oslo.

As of 1 September 2025, the composition of the EUA-CDE Steering Committee will be as follows:

- Peter Hanenberg, Vice-Rector for Research and Doctoral Education and Director of the Doctoral School, Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Portugal (Chair)

- John Creemers, former Director of the Doctoral School of Biomedical Sciences, KU Leuven, Belgium; President, Organisation of PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System (ORPHEUS)

- Irma Grdzelidze, former Head of Quality Assurance Service and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Georgia

- Ann MacPhail, Associate Vice-President of the Doctoral College, University of Limerick, Ireland

- Tanja Storsul, Pro-Rector for Research and Development, Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet), Norway

- Andrei Terian-Dan, Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation and Internationalisation, Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, Romania

- Karin van Wingerde, Director, Graduate School of Law, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Netherlands

- Krzysztof Walkowiak, Dean of the Doctoral School, Wrocław University of Science and Technology, Poland

- Massimiliano Zattin, Vice-Rector for Postgraduate and Doctoral Programmes, University of Padua, Italy

- Maurizio Tira, former Rector and Full Professor of Town and Regional Planning, University of Brescia, Italy (ex-officio EUA Board member).
