The EUA Council for Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE) has launched a survey entitled ‘Doctoral education in Europe today: achievements, policies and emerging trends’.
The outcome of the survey will provide our community with crucial data about the state of play of doctoral education in Europe. Moreover, it will inform future policy development and member activities of EUA-CDE.
2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the Salzburg Principles, which emerged from the Bologna Process and have since been a cornerstone in shaping doctoral education across Europe. This milestone offers the opportunity to evaluate two decades of progress, considering how reforms have shaped the doctoral education system while addressing contemporary challenges and opportunities in a rapidly evolving landscape. At the same time, the survey seeks to explore current critical policy questions and trends, as well as new challenges and opportunities at a time of geopolitical change and technological acceleration. As such, the survey consists of three parts:
This survey is open to all all EUA and EUA-CDE member institutions. The answers should reflect the institution’s perspective on doctoral education. However, please be aware that only one response per institution should be submitted. The survey will be open until 1 March 2025.
The survey should be filled out by staff responsible for developing and implementing doctoral education at your institution. This may include vice-rectors or deans in charge of doctoral education directors/heads of doctoral schools and programmes, rectoral advisers and other senior professionals with responsibility in this area.
